Darrell John McGhghy

 

Darrell John McGhghy, 66, passed away quietly in his sleep on January 23, 2016, at his home in Lincoln after a three-year-plus battle with cancer.

 

He was born March 31, 1949, in Kearney, Nebraska, to John B. and Elsie E. (Polka) McGhghy. He spent his childhood in North Platte, Maywood, and Omaha, Nebraska. He graduated from Benson High School in Omaha in 1967 and went to Washington, D.C. to work for the FBI as a fingerprint specialist.

 

He moved back to Nebraska in 1971 and became a Trooper in the Nebraska State Patrol, serving on the Executive Protection Detail for most of his career. During that time he served Governors Exon, Thone, Kerrey, Orr, Nelson, and Johanns. After he retired from the patrol in 1999, he worked as a courier and then a government security guard.

 

Darrell was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Patricia Richter; and a niece, Mechelle Richter. He is survived by his former wife, Beverly McGhghy, Virginia Beach, Virginia; a stepson, Hayden Bennett, Virginia Beach, Virginia; two sisters: Marla McGhghy, Omaha and Carol Mullen, Lawrence, Kansas; two nephews: Donald McGhghy, Ocala, Florida, and Shawn Mullen, Leavenworth, Kansas; one niece, Danika McGhghy, Omaha; several great-nieces and –nephews; and many friends and neighbors.

 

The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street, Lincoln, on February 27, 2016, at 2 PM.
